The short answer
Yes, but a space saver is only meant to get you home or to a safe place. It's a thin temporary wheel, and it has a speed limit, usually 50 mph. Check the sticker on the wheel itself, because some are different.
Why the limits matter
- Less grip: the narrow tyre grips less, so braking distances are longer, especially in the wet.
- Different handling: the car can pull or feel unsettled, and some safety systems work less well.
- It wears fast: the tyre is thin and isn't built for long distances.
How to drive on one
- Keep under the speed on the wheel's sticker.
- Check its pressure as soon as you can. Space savers often need higher pressure than normal tyres, and they're often low after years in the boot.
- Drive gently: no hard braking or fast corners.
- Replace it with a proper tyre as soon as possible, ideally the same day.
Is it legal?
Yes, as long as you keep to its limits and the tyre is in good condition. It must not be used as a permanent tyre.
Don't have a spare?
Many modern cars have no spare at all, just a repair kit. The kit can't fix sidewall damage or large holes, and the sealant can make a proper repair harder. If you're not sure, call us instead of driving on.
We'll swap it back for you
We come to your home or work and fit a proper tyre, so you're not driving round on the space saver. Call or WhatsApp 0330 043 6598 with your tyre size and location. See same day mobile tyre fitting.
